A Message from
St. Andrews’ Eighth President
Paul Baldasare:
We invite you to visit St. Andrews & tour our campus. Or, visit our website at http://www.sapc.edu.
Dear Friends,
With pride and admiration, I am pleased to share with you this Fall Alumni and Friends Magazine, which includes a final report on our recently completed capital campaign. Eight years ago, this College courageously chose to undertake its most ambitious fundraising goal ever the five-year, $25 million Share the Vision Campaign for St. Andrews. The decision was courageous not only because the national economy was beginning to slow and the college was experiencing financial pressures, but also because the campaign goal was more than twice the amount of the previously successful campaign just a few years earlier. Nonetheless, with a certain amount of fortitude and determination, as well as no small measure of faith, the campaign was launched.
And good things started happening almost immediately. A significant lead gift was secured and old and new donors were inspired. The faithful were once again faithful, and new friends of the college were made.
Bolstered in part by this successful start of the campaign, a decision was made in 2002 to implement a new comprehensive plan to grow the college through a more strategic enrollment management system. This was a clear recognition that the only lasting way to assure the long-term vitality of the College was through a concerted effort to increase enrollment significantly. With your help, we met our initial campaign goal and made the bold decision to extend the campaign for an additional three years to increase the campaign goal to $35 million.
So, how have we done over the past eight years? Well, for one thing, we surpassed our revised campaign goal by raising $36,603,835. This is an astounding accomplishment for such a small college. Clearly, our friends, alumni, and neighbors both locally and nationally, decided with great conviction that this college needed to be sustained and they gave generously. They recognized that the experiences our students undergo here are life changing and life enhancing, and that St. Andrews is too special a place to abandon.
Over the past four years, a new St. Andrews has been emerging -- a St. Andrews that cherishes its heritage and more confidently faces its future. For four consecutive years, enrollment has increased. As we go to press, 808 students are enrolled at the college, an increase of 32% since Fall 2002. The last time at least 808 students were enrolled at the college was in 1988 and, since 1972, enrollment at the college has surpassed 808 students only once. Perhaps even more impressively, during the past three fiscal years, revenue from operations has increased an astounding 47%!
There are many people to thank for helping to make the Share the Vision Campaign a tremendous success, and their names follow on the pages of this magazine. Surely, we could not have done it without their help and the help of many others and, frankly, without your sustaining gifts we might not be here today to say “thanks.”
I count it as a great personal privilege to be associated with this very special place we lovingly call St. Andrews. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students, I say a heart-felt thank you for your inspirational and courageous decision to uphold this college. Through your commitment and financial support we are enabled to continue to change the lives of our students for the better so that they, in their turn, will carry on our noble tradition of striving to make the world a better place.
Sincerely,
Paul Baldasare.

Dear New Resident:
Approximately 7,000 students attend the 14 schools in our consolidated county school system. There are eight primary schools serving grades Pre-K - 5, three schools (grades 6-8), one high school and one alternative education campus. Our school system motto is -- "Scotland County Schools - An Investment in the Future."
We offer an excellent curriculum and a wide variety of programs, with excellent student/teacher ratios. There are teacher assistants in Pre-K through third grade. We have a comprehensive guidance program in grades Pre-K-12. St. Andrews Presbyterian College shares its indoor pool facilities so all fourth grade students can participate in a swimming program. One of our middle schools has been designated as a North Carolina Physical Education Demonstration School. A comprehensive program for exceptional children serves almost every area of exceptionality, including a magnet school for academically gifted middle school students. Our Cultural Arts Program offers vocal and instrumental music, visual arts, drama and dance. Band instruction begins in the sixth grade. The Scotland High School Marching Band has performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and in Philadelphia's Christmas Parade.
Scotland High School is one of the largest high schools in the state, with an enrollment of approximately 1,900. A comprehensive curriculum prepares students to enter college, trade school or the world of work.
Our Vocational Education programs are outstanding, with students and faculty recognized often at the state and national levels. The Tech Prep Program gives students a more rigorous and focused curriculum, blending high academics and more technical course work to prepare students for post graduate college entry or advanced industrial technical training.
Students have many opportunities to become involved in a variety of activities. An extensive high school athletic program (we are a 4A school) fields 31 teams in 11 sports for boys and girls. Other opportunities include Top Scots, school publications, clubs and service organizations, band and chorus, school theatrical productions and the Quiz Bowl and math teams.
We are fortunate to have a great deal of community support for education. Each school has an active parent group. Our local industries and businesses contribute time, money and materials to broaden and enrich our curriculum. We have an outstanding Community Education Partnership Program and each of our schools has one or more business/industry/community partners.
The people of Scotland County are dedicated to providing the best possible education for young people. With the help of parents and the community, the students in Scotland County are offered many opportunities to learn and excel.
Please let me know if I can be of further service.
Sincerely,
Director for School-Community Relations
